Unlike most other countries throughout the world, the UKsteroids laws that do not make the possession of anabolic steroids and performance enhancing illegal. Distribution and purchasing of such substances is illegal and is punishable as a Class C drug.
In recent moths, amid the excitement and anticipation of the London Olympics 2012, top IOC representatives have been calling for a revamp of the laws surrounding not only the supply of anabolic steroids and PED‘s, but also the possession.
The IOC would like to be on a level playing field with all countries involved following the same laws on the use of banned substances.
At present, doping bodies have the power to demand a test, but they do not have the power to carry out searches to pinpoint the guilt doping culprits.
With laws in place making possession of PED’s and steroids illegal, the doping authorities will have the backing of the police force to carry out searches on suspected dopers. As was the case in 2006 Olympics in Italy where the policing authorities carried out a search to find the Austrian cross-country skiing team guilty of blood doping.
Britain is expected to put in place a new anti-doping authority by next year in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games and with a possible prison sentence of 14 years for supplying steroids and class C substances, is it necessary to change the entire law for the Olympic Games.
