Anabolic steroids have long been known for a long time to have certain psychological problems. Most of these problems tend to occur once the course of steroids have finished.
When on steroids the user is under a false impression of their own strength and size. Most of this is down to the use of steroids and the gains made whilst on the course. After the final administration of steroids, massive reductions in weight and strength follow.
This sudden drop in performance can trigger depression. As was the case with Efrain Marrero, an American footballer from California.
Efrain, 19 years of age and living with parents, started with steroids to increase in size, power and performance to try to compete at college level football. He did this in secret from his family who’s house he was living in.
After suddenly coming off the steroids, he hit a depressive state. His father retells the story even to this day to deter others from resorting to steroids as a performance enhancer.
Just one month after discontinuing the course, paranoia set in, mood swings and rage took over his mild temperament. His family had planned on therapy to help, but the day before his first session, he decided to take his own life to stop the walls from closing in on himself.
He took his fathers gun and shot himself in the head inside the family bathroom.
His fathers tells this story as a deterrent. Hoping that the youth of today do not resort to steroid use as a way to cut corners and be the best.
